Grand Cru is the highest classification of Burgundy vineyards. There are 33 Grands Crus, accounting for less than 2% of production. Each is a unique vineyard plot, or climat, with its own terroir. These are Burgundy’s most prestigious and expensive wines.
The DRC is not open to the public. However, we organize visits to other prestigious domains of comparable quality: Domaine Leflaive, Domaine Armand Rousseau, Domaine de l'Arlot.
The two main varieties are Pinot Noir (red wines) and Chardonnay (white wines). Also found are Aligote (light white) and Gamay (in Mâconnais). Burgundy wines are prized for their elegance, minerality and ability to convey terroir.
A climat is a precisely defined vineyard plot with its own microclimate and soil. Burgundy has 1,247, each producing wine with a unique character. The system of climats is listed as UNESCO World Heritage.
